What Can a GI-MAP Test Tell You About Your Gut Health?

If you’ve been dealing with chronic bloating, fatigue, skin flare-ups, or just a gut feeling that something’s off—you’re not imagining it.

Functional stool testing, like the GI-MAP (Gastrointestinal Microbial Assay Plus), can uncover what conventional tests often miss.

While a standard test might flag up a parasite or infection, the GI-MAP gives a full picture of what's going on in your gut microbiome—from beneficial bacteria to inflammation markers, digestive function, and leaky gut.

1. Pathogens and Parasites

Even “healthy” people can be carrying unwanted guests. The GI-MAP detects viruses, parasites, and bacterial pathogens, many of which are missed in NHS testing unless you’ve travelled recently.

2. Gut Bacteria: The Good, the Bad & the Overgrown

It shows which friendly bacteria are thriving—and which ones are missing or overgrown. Think of it like a report card on your gut garden.
For example:
• Low Lactobacillus or Bifidobacterium might explain sugar cravings or poor immunity.
• High Klebsiella or Prevotella? These are linked to inflammation and autoimmune symptoms.

3. Digestive Function

You’ll see how well your body is breaking down fats, absorbing nutrients, and producing enzymes.
This is especially useful if you feel bloated even after “healthy” meals.

4. Zonulin: The Leaky Gut Marker

Zonulin regulates the tight junctions in your gut lining. When levels are high, it’s a sign those junctions are loose—a.k.a. “leaky gut.”
This is often a root cause in autoimmune conditions, skin flare-ups, and chronic fatigue.

5. Immune and Inflammation Markers

It checks your secretory IgA (the gut’s immune defence) and calprotectin (a marker for inflammation). If your immune system is either hyper-alert or barely responding, the test can pick that up.

This isn’t about diagnosing disease.
It’s about finding patterns and imbalances—so you can support your body naturally and address the root cause, not just the symptoms.

Many of my clients say it’s the first time they’ve felt seen and understood, especially after years of being told “everything looks normal.”
